DAVIES-A survived a scary 12-11 semifinal victory against Villamonte but easily won the final match over Mustangs, 15-11 in the Talk n’ Text-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) U18 Tatluhan 3x3 Basketball Tournament Bacolod Leg at the West Negros University gym yesterday.
Represented by the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos quartet of JL Torral, Patrick Yulo, Armand Kyle Guevarra, and Al John Catague, Davies-A pocketed the P10,000 top prize.
The Mustangs closest was at 5-7 in the first three minutes but the outside shooting of Guevarra and the inside game of Torral changed the complexion of the game.
The champions topped Pool A and easily disposed Davies-B, 16-8 in the quarterfinal which served as its shooting drill and warm-up match. The semis was more intense with no teams scoring in the last 90 seconds.
Davies-A used its 30-second timeout and Yulo missed two free throws as running time runs out.
The Mustangs trampled Sum-ag High School-A, 11-4 in the quarterfinal and toyed with Pegasus, 18-14 in a shootout match with no defense at all from both squads.
Pegasus triumphed in the quarterfinal with a 14-9 domination of CITV while Villamonte shaded BCCN, 12-11 after trailing 7-11 in the last two minutes. BCCN committed three errors and failed to call for a timeout as pressure sipped failing to buy a basket.
