BACOLOD City Mayor Monico Puentevella advised upcoming players to "use your heads and not to rely on skills alone.”

Puentevella, a former sports commissioner, spoke before some 140 aspiring cagers in yesterday’s opening of the Talk n’ Text-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) U18 Tatluhan 3x3 Basketball Tournament (Bacolod leg) at the West Negros University gym.

Puentevella said that with opportunities just lying ahead for the young generation to travel and compete abroad, intellect is an essential factor to a successful career.

“Though most of you are skilled and talented, at the end of the day, it’s still your decision which brings the result. Hence, you must play intelligently,” he added.

The erstwhile chairman of the Philippine Olympic Committee also lauded the SBP for the basketball programs it is implementing in the country, particularly in the provinces.

“I would like to thank Mr. Tony Agustin, our SBP-Negros Occidental chairman, for the effort he does in bringing this program in the city and in the province,” the mayor said.

Agustin said that aside from providing a highly-competitive tournament in the grassroots, the SBP-sanctioned competition will also serve as qualifying round to determine which team will represent Bacolod in the National Finals to be held in Manila.

“Aside from these, the top teams in this tournament will get a chance to represent the country to the Fiba 3-on-3 for Asia Pacific which will be hosted by the Philippines on July 19 and 20,” Agustin said.

Teams participating are War Horse, Davies A, Green Team and Singcang A in Pool A. Red Horse, CITV, Singcang B and TCS are in Pool B; Stag, BTTHS A, Singcang C and Sum-ag High School A are in Pool C.

Pool D consists of Broncos, BTTHS B, Villamonte and OJ while Pool E is comprised of Colts, BCCN, Troy Team, Iron Birds. In Pool F are Mustangs, Extinguishers, La Salle, Avengers and Dark Knights.

Pool G has Slashers, SJI, Mutzo, Mula and Pegasus and Pool H includes Pony, Davies B, Cubay, Sum-ag High School B and Granada. (HGD)
