BACOLOD Tay Tung High School avenged its loss last year to West Negros University with an emphatic, 74-52 win to advance to the Visayas regionals of the 2014 Coca Cola PBA Youngstars at WNU gym.
Errol Pastor was unstoppable with 24 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks while center Miggy Corteza added 14 markers, 10 caroms and 8 swats to completely dominate the game.
Bullstrong Jesmar Pedrosa scattered 12 points coupled with six hauls and three steals to upset the Junior Mustangs who jumpstarted with a 4-0 lead only to be dehoofed, 12-8 in the first quarter.
The Thunderbolts further torched WNU with a 24-4 blast in the second canto and relaxed with a 36-12 halftime lead. Jaycee Adjei and Reuel Palma kept the Junior Mustangs alive with 23 points and 13, respectively, but these were not enough to stop the onslaught.
Tay Tung eased up on the third with a 20-17 score but still on top 56-29 and WestNeg tried a last ditch rally by outscoring the Thunderbolts, 23-18 in the final quarter. WNU looked too spent with its semifinal game against St. John's Institute on Monday and the triple attempts were way off mark.
Coach Mark Belangel shuffled his charges well enough and the Thunderbolts responded while WNU coach Dennis Tumayan could only sympathize with his wards who were hoping for a repeat.
SBP provincial head Anthony Carlo Agustin, commissioners Bobby Tee and Jake Azucena awarded the championship trophy to the new champions. (HGD)
