THE Negros Occidental delegation of 198 athletes and 49 coaches and officials who are part of the Western Visayas contingent in the 2014 Palarong Pambansa in Laguna left Bacolod City last night on board a 2GO Travel ship.

Romeo Sison, Department of Education-Negros Occidental sports coordinator, said over Aksyon Isports of dyEZ Aksyon Radyo-Bacolod that more than 500 athletes, coaches and delegation officials from Region 6 will attend the opening rites at the Laguna Sports Complex in Sta. Cruz on May 4.

“Aside from our delegation officials from DepEd, there are also government officials who confirmed attendance in the opening ceremony with Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and provincial sports coordinator Angel Verdeflor,” Sison said.

Meanwhile, Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella said that he will also attend the opening rites but he will fly back to Bacolod the next day to prepare for the opening of the Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup Group B Qualifier on May 6 at the Panaad Stadium.

Sison said the Western Visayas contingent will be housed at the Crisanto Guysayco Memorial Elementary School in Nagcarlan town.

“It’s a little bit far from the playing venues at approximately 20 kilometers,” the DepEd official said.

“But the host-province is working out everything to ensure good billeting facilities for all contingents. Earlier, our province as well as the region sent a team to conduct ocular inspection of the billeting and playing venues. So far, we don’t have any problem,” Sison added.

Meanwhile, Sison said that as reigning first runner-up, Western Visayas is eyeing to dethrone long-time tormentor National Capital Region (NCR).
“However, there are changes in determining the champion team. Instead of using the point system, the medal system will be applied – in which is disadvantageous to us,” he explained.

“Whatever the system, our athletes are ready,” he said.

NCR finished with a total of 117 gold medals, 111 silver and 54 bronze medals in last year’s Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City.

It garnered 43 gold, 39 silver and 24 bronze medals in the elementary division and 71-72-30 gold-silver-bronze in secondary level. The NCR also garnered a total of 596.5 points (227.5 and 369.0).

As first runner-up, Region 6 registered a total of 78-38-53 gold-silver-bronze with 27 golds, 17 silvers and 28 bronzes in the elementary division and 51 golds, 21 silvers and 25 bronzes in the secondary divisions. It had 189.67 points in elementary category and 256.67 in secondary division for a total of 446.34 points.
