BACOOD City Mayor Monico Puentevella, a member of the Fifa TV and Marketing Committee, said the City Government will do everything to ensure the Philippines’ successful hosting of the 2014 AFC President’s Cup on May 6 to 10 at the Panaad Park and Stadium.

Puentevella, also a former president of Negros Occidental Football Association, said the international sporting event is not only for sports tourism but also aims to uplift the spirit of Bacolodnons.

“This is to prove that we can do it, that we can aspire to achieve all our dreams and that we can also be the best,” the former congressman said.

Bacolod and Negros Occidental’s hosting of the event confirms that indeed both the city and the province are now the country’s football capital outside Metro Manila.

“Thank you to the vision of the Philippine Football Federation headed by its president Mariano ‘Nonong’ Araneta. Our gratitude too to the Yanson family for their effort in making Ceres-La Salle FC the national champion,” he said.

Puentevella also appealed to Bacolodnons and Negrenses to support Ceres-La Salle FC which is representing the Philippines in the tournament.

“Our team needs all the support. Let’s all meet at Panaad. Turkmenistan is the defending AFC champion while North Korea is a World Cup caliber and Taiwan is also a good team. Our team needs all of us. Please come,” the mayor appealed.

Meanwhile, Local Organizing Committee (LOC) chairman Nicolas Golez also called on Negrenses to show their all-out support to the national team.

“We would like to have a full [Panaad] stadium every match day, not only for the team’s morale but also to greatly leave an impression on other teams as well as the AFC,” he said.

Golez said admission is free in the open bleachers and some parts of the stadium.

“This would be the best opportunity for your club, to make noise by bringing along drums, trumpet, show patriotism by waving our national flag, improvise streamers showing support and other related activities to drumbeat the event,” he added. (HGD)
