WEST Negros University (WNU) defeated St. John’s Institute (SJI) , 86-80 to retain the championship in the Aspirants division basketball tournament of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Educational Association during the finals held last March 16 at the WNU gym.

Reuel Palma scored 11 of his team’s last 17 points to lead WNU to a successful title defense.

WNU and SJI were tied at 69 all, but Palma knocked down back-to-back corner dagger treys that shifted the momentum to WNU.

Palma together with Jaycee Adjei put the finishing touches to counter the rally of the Junior Falcons who could only come close at 84-80 on the two free throws by Justin Javelosa.

The fouling out of the Junior Falcons point guard Jeruel Tagle late in the fourth quarter coincided with the Junior Mustangs run. SJI also missed on 17 free throws and crucial turnovers at several points in their rally that doomed their campaign for a double championship after winning the 10 Under title.

Adjei had a game-high 27 points for WNU, Mark Russel Moragas delivered 20 points, Palma scored 18 points, John Paul Malayas drilled 14 points, and Mark Bryan Bandojo contributed five pts.

Donn Spencer Lim paced SJI with 26 points. Frontcourt players Kyle Chua and Joshua Magay had the same 11 points output. Javelosa and Jeruel Tagle made eight points each, Paul Fuentebella shot 7 points, Ian Japzon had 5 points while Kish Suarez and Sam Solinap round up the scoring for SJI with two points apiece.
