REIGNING WBO minimumweight champion Merlito Sabillo has arrived in Monterrey, Mexico together with his trainer Edito Villamor from San Diego, California aboard United Airlines plane Wednesday.

Sabillo has been in rigid training in the United States for almost a month in preparation for his title defense against the young Mexican challenger Francisco “Chihuas” Rodriguez Jr. this coming Saturday, March 22, at the latter’s hometown.

“I pray that I win this fight. I am very thankful for the support given to me by the Aldeguer and Guanzon families as well as to the sportswriters,” the champion said.

Sabillo, who was born in Toboso, Negros Occidental and grew up in Barangay Singcang-Airport in Bacolod City, will put his title at stake as well as his undefeated record of 23 wins and a draw with 12 triumphs via knockouts. His 20-year-old challenger has an impressive record of 13-2 win-loss card with 9 KOs.

Sabillo has been successful in keeping his unblemished record after his last title defense ended in a split draw against tough Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua. This is not Tiger’s first fight in a Latin American soil but he isn’t complacent as Mexicans are true fighters.

On March 9, 2013, Sabillo defeated Colombian Luis de la Rosa in Coliseo Mario de Leon to win the championship belt.
