SIZE does not matter, sometimes, in big men's game.
Small but terrible Peewee Demonteverde scored 43 points as Probac derailed Faith Taxi, 143-116 on Sunday at the resumption of 1st Barangay Bata Council (BBC) Open Invitational Basketball Tournament at the village’s new covered court.
University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos shared Probac's 2-0 record after baiting the Sharks of Visayan Maritime Academy Global College, 102-58 as Ramon de la Torre hit 17 points in the process, and took the I-Mart best player award.
Pabac barged into the win column by nipping Bata Selection, 111-109 as Catsi Cadagat drilled in 37 points and “'Epi” de los Santos added 31. The hosts got 24 points from Ace Santos and 17 from Boy Salazar.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Bata squad which completed the six-team league organized by BBC and spearheaded by its councilman Leo Bat-og, a former UNO-R Ram, Negros Slasher in the MBA, and Sta. Lucia Realtor in the PBA.
Probac, a club composed of young professionals and ex-varsitarians, got additional 32 points from Toto Abrot and 20 from Wendell Fernandez who supported Demonteverde in pocketing his second I-Mart player award.
Carl John Oquindo was the only bright spot for the Taxi Drivers who sank 36 points.
Games on Saturday pit Probac and Pabac (1-1) at 5:30 p.m. while UNO-R meets Bata (0-1) at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Bata faces VMA-GC (1-2) at 3:30 p.m.; UNO-R battles Faith Taxi (0-2) at 5 p.m. and Petron Thunderbird (1-1)tries Pabac in the main game of the tripleheader.
Barangay 35 (1-1) begs off this coming weekend as requested by village chief and coach Maui Huelar.
Bat-og thanked the BBC and supporters like Deonyson Dy of I-Mart and the basketball fans who crowd the weekend games. (HGD)
