Tanduay Black earns finals slot

NUMBER 4 Cobra Energy Drink forced a rubber match as they defeated No. 1 Beer na Beer 83-77 while No. 2 Tanduay Black advanced to the finals after rallying past No. 3 Tanduay Ice 78-72 in the Class B semifinals of the Fil-Sino Asia Brewery Inc. Invitational Cup at Bacolod Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym.

Cobra, who started the tournament with three straight losses, has racked up five straight wins to knock at the door of a finals slot. The rubber match between Cobra and BNB is being played as of press time.

Romar Desusa paced Cobra with 18 points as he led four other players in double figures led by Mykil Ang and Julius Teruel with 15 points apiece, Chief Supt. Adonis Rosales added 14 points, Ralph Richard Tan with 13 points and Brian Ong had six points.


Cobra posted a slim opening quarter lead 19-18 behind Teruel and Rosales combining for 13 points while Tubby Villanueva scored 10 points for BNB.

Cobra outscored BNB in the next two quarters for a 59-51 advantage going to the fourth quarter.

BNB scored the first four points in the payoff quarter, but Romar Desusa, Julius Teruel and Ralph Richard Tan took turns in delivering three point plays to take a double digit lead, which Cobra maintained majority of the quarter.

Tanduay Black clawed back from a 17-point deficit to pull off the victory and advance to the finals to be played this Friday.

Joel Masadia fired 12 points, Monroe Chua, Arvin Chua and Dr. Emil Guanzon combined for 21 points to propel Tanduay Ice to a 44-27 lead.

Black woke up from its slumber and limited Ice to 10 third quarter points while Ryan Alegario and Brent Chan delivered five points apiece to pace a balance Black offense to draw closer at the end of the third quarter 54-50.

Daniel Chiu hit back to back triple at the start of the fourth quarter to give the lead to Black for good.

DK Equipaje and Ryan Alegario scored eight and five points respectively to contain the challenge of Ice posed by Clarence Quingco three triples and Dr. Emil Guanzon five points.
