ONE of the most prestigious softball tournaments in the country – the “Battle of Softball Champions” is scheduled March 2 at Hacienda Lonoy Softball Park in Silay City, Negros Occidental.

Top softball teams in Western Visayas like reigning Asia-Pacific Regional Softball champion Zarraga National High School; 2012 National Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) titlist Central Philippine University; regional (State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association) Scuaa champion Carlos Hilado Memorial State College; and long time defending Palarong Pambansa champion Domingo Lacson National High School will have a day to prove who is the best in Panay and Negros.

Organizer Adolf Ledesma said the event will provide Palaro-bound Negros clouters and Iloilo batters going to the National Prisaa and the Philippine Series the opportunity of undergoing a tough test before competing in their respective age-groups.

“This will also establish a friendly rivalry between two provinces,” Ledesma said.

Tournament manager Antonio Oquindo Jr., a 16-time Palarong Pambansa champion coach, said the competition will bring softball to the next level of global competitiveness.

Oquindo got also the opportunity to explain why he turned his back at Bacolod City and Negros Occidental.

“I’m retired now and a freelancer. What we are doing in Iloilo Province is part of our sports development program. In fact, we have a proposal before the office of DepEd-Negros Occidental that we will be conducting series of softball clinics from north to south,” he said.

“What we are looking forward is to have a stronger and competitive softball team from Western Visayas,” Oquindo added.

Ledesma also said they are eyeing to host an Under-15 tournament after this event.

“Our goal is to have a more competitive tournament in the Visayas region,” he said.

Sponsoring the event are Casey Ledesma, Michael and Ging Graham, Dr. S. Alvin, Barbara Sanico, Reynaldo Fuentes, Adolf Ledesma and Scoop-Bacolod Inc.
