THE 8th Monico Cup has set the deadline of submission of lineups until midnight of March 8. You can bet, that a lot of barangays will submit their entries before this month ends.

What's the catch.

The earlier an entry is screened the earlier the team can have their uniform (upper jersey) made by NHOJs Sportswear at Shopping.
If the gallery submitted contains players all born in Bacolod in year 1993 and beyond, that Barangay can be in the 24 or 32 teams that will play up to the championship.

It's a first come, first served basis, says Art Puentevella, youth and sports coordinator, and sports official Jack Marañon will use his night goggles so that no one can make a joke of the Screening Committee.

Honesty will be the best policy as those who will use unqualified players will be having difficulty later changing line-ups and most likely will miss the last bus to the Cup.

The 21-Under tournament is designed to discover talents who will be made athletic scholars by the top four collegiate teams like UNO-Recoletos, University of St. La Salle, West Negros University and Colegio San Agustin.

The second aim of Mayor Monico is to pick the best players who are qualified to join commercial teams, not only to play in the league but to work and earn a living under the same employer.

With Negros Basketball Association gone (or in hiatus) and the Fil-Sino not keen on a merger, it is high time other companies and establishments form their own teams and join the planned commercial league.

It is sort of a throwback '80s and '90s where varsity players are like hotcakes being groomed to join Coca-Cola, San Miguel Corp, PLDT, Jazz Cola, China Rose, Pepsi Cola, and other companies before he graduates.
Some of the diligent ones later became engineers, personnel managers, permanent employees until they retire.

Others brought their talents in the Big City, play in top universities and colleges, later to amateur leagues and later to the Philippine Basketball Association.

So you see, next month is the Monico Cup. By June, who knows a dozen of these MKK participants will be donning a Rams, Stingers, Mustangs, Eagles or VMA Sharks uniform.

Everything is possible and from this small city league who will think that the Bacolod City Coliseum designed by the son of Architect Tony Corral, will be the venue years from now.
