Regional meet opens in Antique Sunday

THE 2014 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet opens Sunday, 4 p.m., at the Evelio B. Javier Memorial Sports Complex in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique.

With “Playing Together, Building Together, Rising Together,” as its theme, the Department of Education-sanctioned competition will run from February 9-14, and the winners will represent Region 6 in the Palarong Pambansa.

A Eucharistic celebration and ecumenical service will be held Sunday 7 a.m. at the Evelio B. Javier Memorial Sports Center followed by the solidarity meeting of technical officiating officials and coaches at 9:30 a.m.


At 2 p.m., all technical officials and delegations will assemble at the Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park where the grand parade will start at 3 p.m. going to the sports complex for the opening rites.

Some 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials are expected to attend the ceremony of which over 400 athletes, 100 coaches and 201 technical officials are from Negros Occidental.

The athletes will see action in archery at the Villa del Carmen Inland Resort; arnis, Advance Central College; athletics, basketball, football, tennis, sipa, elementary and secondary volleyball, and special events, Evelio B. Javier Memorial Sports Complex; badminton and taekwondo, Evelio B. Javier Memorial Sports Center;

Elementary and secondary baseball, Saint Anthony’s College Field; chess, Division of Antique rooftop; gymnastics, Angel Salazar Jr. Memorial School gym; softball, Antique National School field; sepak takraw, Antique National School quadrangle; swimming, Binirayan swimming pool; and table tennis, Saint Anthony’s College De Witt Hall.

Alternative venues are San Pedro gym and Hamtic municipal gym for basketball while for volleyball, AU gym, Sibalom gym and Hamtic municipal gym.

The venue for boxing has yet to be finalized as of press time.

The team managers for Negros Occidental are Shiela Duran, arnis; Rey Fama, badminton; Jenivan Jadoc, elementary baseball; Severino Estrella, secondary baseball; Jed Jermina, chess; Dennis Estaniel, football; Edwin Subong, sepak takraw; Rodito Badian, softball; and Harny Tabuada, taekwondo.

Assistant team managers are Rene Dadivas, athletics; Leo Dayot, football; Alice Jungco, gymnastics; and Michael Yanos, table tennis.

Officials in the special games are Sagay City’s Virgie Repal for athletics field, Bacolod City’s Andro Echano, Thea Tardaguela and Romuel Solitano for goal ball; and Bacolod City’s Sarah Alcachupas, Mariolen Dadivas and Joan Catalan for bocce. (HGD)
