A TWO-DAY Under-12 and Under-20 Chess Tournament opens today at the Our Lady of Parish gym in Barangay Bata, Bacolod City aimed to develop the game in the grassroots level.

Sponsored by the Barangay Bata Council, through Councilmen Roderick Gregas and Vilma Descutido, the tournament is held in order to identify and develop the potential of future masters.

Gregas said it is one way of giving back to the chess community the benefits he is reaping today because he once played the game, too.

Prizes in both categories are P1,500 for the champion; second place, P1,200; third place, P1,000; and fourth to 10th place, P200.

The top three winners will also get a trophy, while the rest of the finishers will be awarded a medal.

Ground rules allow a player one hour and five minutes to finish in seven rounds of Swiss system. Defaulting time is 30 minutes after the white makes a move, and it will be governed by the Fide laws of chess, organizers said.

Tournament director Philip Caudilla said participating woodpushers are required to bring their own chess set with a clock for convenience.

Registration fee is P150.

An inter-purok dama tournament will also be held during the chess tilt. (HGD)
