RISING basketball star Sam Josef Belangel saved his best game for the championship and led Team Bacolod Saturday to a 20-15 victory over Zamboanga in the 3-on-3 event of the 2013 Batang Pinoy National Finals in Bacolod City.
The quartet of Belangel, Miggy Corteza, Jesmar Pedrosa and Errol Pastor repeated over the Zamboangueños whom they beat 13-12 on Friday to sweep the elimination with a 6-0 slate.
Sta. Rosa, Laguna beat Pangasinan for third place.
The lanky Corteza, unstoppable underneath, put the finishing touches with a follow-up after three misses for the final score following Belangel's two successive jumpers with Bacolod leading 17-14 with three minutes left.
Zamboanga put up a good fight snatching some leads before succumbing to pressure and losing a teammate on fouls.
Belangel and Corteza will join six other standouts from the tournament for a trip to the United States as an incentive from the Philippine Olympic Committee, Philippine Sports Commission and Batang Pinoy.
The top eight players from the distaff side, won by Pangasinan, followed by Bataan, Laguna and Bacolod, will also travel to the US.
Cojuangco, Puentevella, PSC Commissioner Jolly Gomez and Deputy Executive Director Bernie Atienza of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas awarded the medals during the closing rites held at the Po Hang Gym.
