Imprisonment of senators

-A A +A

THE Philippines is now held in abeyance as Filipinos observe how justice is being carried out in this country. Senator Bong Revilla will now have his vacation in his prison cell. Senator Estrada also surrendered Monday. I just hope that they receive the same treatment as any ordinary accused. We wish to see them feel what the poor innocent prisoners feel inside the jampacked cells in this country.

Let us assume the three (including Senator Enrile) are already in their cells and the other accused in the second list will also be imprisoned together with the Congressmen. I guess the National Bilibid will now be renamed Senate and House of Congress buildings. This will be great and we will be very popular in the whole universe. We will be the first country with majority of its legislators, if not all, are prisoners and plunderers. This is great.

If justice will follow its course, I think these people will be pronounced guilty of plunder and will surely be out of their seats. There will be vacuum in the legislation. And if it so warrants, the Judiciary will also be tried of the questionable accounts of the justices under former Chief Justice Renato Corona and the present justices on their disbursements of public funds. We will no longer have the legislative and the judiciary. It will be a great joy for the executive. However, if proven that most of the members of the cabinet, including the President himself, were recipients of the “pork” and other funds then we will not have any government at all. I wish and pray that this will not happen.

On the other hand, my mind keeps telling me that this is a political circus and it is covering the truth. It is hiding something and has once again smoke-screened reality. The Aquino administration no longer knows how to handle the situation. Poverty in the countryside has gone up. Insurgency from all corners of the country is back. No budget and clear policies in education. No clear economic programs. The executive branch of this administration is uncontrollable. The President is deciding on account of what his advisers tell him. And, the President and his men are always out. These are some of the issues smoked by the plunder case against the three senators. In the recent past, the Corona impeachment was the main focus of the country and we (Filipinos) are left to rot while peoples’ money were used to fatten the pockets of those in administration.

Looking at these, it seems that once again the focus of the Filipino nation has been diverted into a virtual issue. While we pity the senator-in-prison, the administration is busy in fixing the problems it has brought.

Massive poverty in this country had hit the ceiling. Statistics show that 6 out of 10 children go to bed with their stomachs empty. This is still good for I guess Malacañang will only be alarmed when it is already 9 is to 10. K to 12 has gone haywire as offering of Senior High (Grades 11 and 12) is fast approaching. This is a monster that could no longer be controlled. The budget for education is too high that they do not know how to use it. While many sleep with empty stomachs, officials come and go out of the country in the guise of international relations.

Lastly, this is a good cover-up to the brewing conflict at the high seas and controversy as to territorial disputes. The country went into this conflict without weighing its capacity and ability. God bless us all.

St. Ezekiel Moreno, Sts. Lorenzo Ruiz and Pedro Calungsod, Mons. John Liu and John Su and Sir Faraon Lopez, pray for us.
