Using gadgets on board aircrafts

-A A +A

SELFIE and I.T. fanatics are all happy when the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) released the advisory that cellphones, tablets, and iphones could already be used on board an aircraft flying thousands of feet above the seas and flatlands.

Yes, this is exciting since you could take a thousand photos of yourself on board and send those photos to your Facebook friends while still flying up high.

But the hour or so that one is using to tinker his or her expensive cellphone on board even when not necessary is depriving your health of a needed relaxation that you once were doing while flying. It is wiser that you take a nap, or sleep or just relax your mind. This way, you get relaxed when you arrive at your destination, already re-charged and ready for your business or leisure destinations.

That is how I observe the effects of the new advisory since I myself know that using a cellphone on board will not really matter. But relaxing on a comfortable aircraft seat is better for your health since you are up in high altitude. It is up to you guys, anyway.

January is filled with various events for different destinations like Kalibo for Ati-atihan; Iloilo for Dinagyang; Cebu and Kabankalan for Sinulog; Bacolod for Bacolaodiat and Batang Pinoy, and more. But it amuses me when millions of pesos are being spent for these events where I got involved for many years too, while tourism organizers do not care much about ensuring that toilets play a vital role.

When I was appointed festival manager of Iloilo Dinagyang in 2001, I made sure that the first outlay of the festival budget went to fabricating decent portable toilets, at the least. That would make you control and penalize revelers urinating on the side streets, which is a common thing.

It really amuses me too why the Health Office of many local governments do not care much that public places like carinderias, restaurants, bars and the like should be penalized and not allowed to operate with stinking or substandard toilets. This is a big question that could not be answered until today. There are exceptions, of course. Some local governments are strict.

In Marikina City, urinating along the side roads or anywhere outside of a toilet carries a penalty so residents got used to following the law.

This gets to show that the enforcement of the law is dependent always on the leaders of any local government. Why is Davao peaceful and other cities are not? Simple answer. Because Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte is strict and enforces the laws. Some officials are probably ashamed or afraid or never care at all, or maybe do not know their commitments to their constituents. When will this country ever learn? Maybe in year 2999.
