Electricity use dips during Earth Hour

A TOTAL of 34.67 megawatts of electricity was saved in the Visayas during Earth Hour last Saturday.

According to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, the load reduction was 8.69 MW in Negros, 6.68 MW in Cebu, 6.39 MW in Panay, 11.61 MW in Leyte-Samar and 1.3 MW in Bohol.

Rey Maleza, supervisor of Energy Industry Management Division of the Department of Energy Cebu Field Office, also confirmed the load reduction in his Facebook account.


In Bacolod City, 1,000 candles were lighted during the Earth Hour ceremony at SM City Bacolod.

Speakers from participating organizations and sectors delivered messages. In the afternoon, hundreds joined the Earth Hour Walk from Capitol Lagoon going to SM City grounds.

Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement of the World Wide Fund to unite people to take action for the planet.

This year’s global tagline is “Use Your Power to Change Climate Change.”
