ABOUT 50 passengers of Ceres Liner bus were involved in a hostage drama after a young man held them at gun point during a stop-over at the terminal in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental close to 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

No one was hurt, but 26-year-old suspect Richard Opelio was brought to a health center after he was disarmed, and mauled by some of the passengers.

Chief Inspector Lino Dalisay, chief of Hinigaran Municipal Police Station, said Opelio, a resident of Barangay 4, Kabankalan City, was carrying a .38 caliber revolver.

The bus was on its way to Bacolod to Kabankalan when he attempted to take the wheel, however, the engine died.

Passenger Lawrence Palmos, 24, of Barangay Tuyom, Cauayan town, then saw the chance to seize the suspect’s firearm.

While they grappled for the firearm, it went off but the bullet got stuck inside the barrel. Palmos then dragged the suspect to entrance of the bus, after which he was disarmed and subdued by policemen.

The other passengers then mauled him.
