A FISHERMAN is missing while his six companions were rescued after their fishing boat crashed into a barge loaded with empty container vans in the waters of Barangay Tomontong in EB Magalona, Negros Occidental yesterday morning.
Lt. Commander Glen Daraug, chief of Philippine Coast Guard-Bacolod, identified the missing fisherman as Fernan Tolentino.
He said the SMV loader owned by Seamine Ventures was on its way to Naga City when it met an accident.
The seven fishermen, all residents of Banate, Iloilo were on board F/B Prince Amiel which sank after the collision. F/B Prince Amiel is owned by Ariel Baylon also of Banate.
Another fisherman Christopher Baldemor was injured and is being treated at Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod.
Daraug said the fishermen jumped into the sea when they saw the barge approaching.
Fishing boat captain Nilo Amimi said in a radio interview they sent a signal to the barge about their presence, but still it did not change course.
“We didn’t have time to turn our boat around so we jumped into the sea,” he said.
Barge captain Johnny Garcier of Dumangas, Iloilo said he saw only one light from the fishing boat and it was too late when he tried to change course.
