P11.50 Western Visayas wage hike up for signing

THE Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board for Western Visayas is expected to approve today a P11.50 increase in the region’s daily minimum wage.

John Peter Millan, the employers’ representative to the board, said the increase is due for approval despite the declaration of workers’ representative Wennie Sancho that he will not sign the wage order “as a manifestation of indignation and protest.”

Electricity use dips during Earth Hour

A TOTAL of 34.67 megawatts of electricity was saved in the Visayas during Earth Hour last Saturday.

According to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, the load reduction was 8.69 MW in Negros, 6.68 MW in Cebu, 6.39 MW in Panay, 11.61 MW in Leyte-Samar and 1.3 MW in Bohol.

NPA claims membership up

THE New People's Army (NPA) in Negros Island claims that its numbers have increased as the communist group marked its 46th anniversary yesterday.

1 killed, 3 hurt as motorbikes collide

A motorcycle rider was killed while three minors were injured in a head-on collision between two motorcycles in Bacolod City Sunday morning.

2 men from Salvador Benedicto get 80 years each for rape

A REGIONAL Trial Court in Bacolod City sentenced on Thursday two men from Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental to 80 years of imprisonment each after they were found guilty of raping a 12-year-old girl almost 15 years ago.

Dante Librando and Winnie Pescador were convicted for two counts of rape and will suffer the penalty of reclusion perpetua or a maximum of 40 years in prison for each count without eligibility of parole with all of its accessory penalties.

15 market blocks face closure

WHILE trying to arrest a suspected drug pusher Tuesday evening, police stumbled into his house and found two alleged drug users there instead.

Senior Inspector Edencio Gregorio, chief of Manapla Municipal Police Station, said his personnel were running after Rodolfo Daiz, who was earlier caught selling a suspected shabu to a police-poseur buyer, but got into his house and found two persons allegedly using the illegal substance.
