A TAXI driver was robbed and killed by his three passengers along the national highway of Hacienda Clarita in Barangay San Jose, E.B Magalona town, Negros Occidental Friday morning.

Police identified the victim as Alejandro Jarina, 53, driver of M2J3 Taxi and a resident of Barangay Vito, Sagay City.

Senior Insp. Conrado Rances, chief of E.B Magalona Municipal Police Station, said the victim was stabbed in his right chest by the suspects, who were arrested during a hot pursuit operation.

Arrested were Jose Salvador Maribuhoc, 27, Rommel Paabot, 21, both residents of Hacienda Teresa, Barangay Alicante, E.B Magalona, and Romeo Toting, 33, Hacienda Gaston, Manapla.

The three suspects were all sugarcane plantation workers.

Investigation showed that around 1:30 a.m., Jarina was in the area of Libertad Market in Bacolod City when the suspects hired him to bring them to E.B. Magalona in northern Negros.

As they were approaching Hacienda Clarita, the suspects declared hold-up and stabbed the victim twice in his chest using an unidentified bladed weapon, Rances said.

Jarina lost control of his vehicle and it swerved towards a canal. Still, he managed to jump from the car while the suspects fled.

The taxi driver asked help from residents in the area and he was brought to Teresita L. Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City, were he died.

During the hot pursuit operation, Toting, who was wounded in his head, was arrested inside the sugarcane field at Hacienda Clarita at around 4 a.m.

After his arrest, he revealed the whereabouts of his two companions that resulted to their apprehension at Hacienda Teresa, Barangay Alicante at around 11:30 a.m.

Maribuhoc and Paabot told the police they didn't know that Toting was planning to rob the taxi driver. They claimed that they were sleeping at the back seat of the taxi while Toting was sitting on the driver’s side.

However, Toting also denied that he stabbed the victim, Rances said.

It was not yet determined how much they took from Jarina’s collection.

Rances said the three suspects, who were detained at the police station’s lock-up cell, will be charged for robbery with homicide. (MAP)
