NEGROS Occidental has the highest deaths due to leptospirosis among the provinces in Western Visayas region, according to the data from the Emerging and Pre-Emerging Disease and Control Office of the Department of Health (DOH).
Dr. Maria Jocelyn Te of the DOH-Western Visayas said that of the four deaths due to leptospirosis, three were recorded in Negros Occidental while only one was reported in Iloilo from January to June this year.
Te said the public should be aware of the dangers of the disease and that they should immediately seek medical treatment at the early stage.
He reminded Negrenses to avoid wading in floodwater especially during the rainy season because they could be contaminated with the disease.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection commonly transmitted by rodents or animal urine or water containing animal urine coming into contact with the eyes, mouth, nose and open wounds exposed to a contaminated environment such as flood water.
Without treatment, leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.
It is one of the four common diseases the DOH is warning Filipinos to be wary of especially during the rainy season.
The DOH advised the public to make sure that canals and other drainage system are not clogged so that once it rains, flood water will not be at standstill.
