NEGROS Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said he sees as a good sign the presence of Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II in today’s meeting for the proposed one-island region at the Capitol Social Hall in Bacolod City.

"It's a very good sign that Secretary Roxas will personally hear the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed one-island region. We hope that he will recommend the matter to the President," the governor said.

The meeting, which will start at 9 a.m., is expected to gather more than 200 officials from Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.

In the Occidental side, Marañon and Vice Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson will lead the local officials along with Representatives Jeffrey Ferrer of the Fourth District, Leo Rafael Cueva of the Second District, Alfredo Benitez of the Third District, Alejandro Mirasol of the Fifth District and party-list Representatives Stephen Paduano of Abang Lingkod of Gary Alejano of Magdalo.

Twenty-three mayors from the province have confirmed attendance in today's meeting along with some vice mayors and council members.

In the Oriental side, Governor Roel Degamo will send a representative.

Those who confirmed attendance are Vice Governor Edward Mark Macias as well as Rep. Manuel Iway of the First District, Rep. George Arnaiz of the Second District, and Rep. Pryde Henry Teves of the Third District.

Thirteen mayors and six vice mayors and several council members from Oriental have also confirmed attendance.

Degamo has not yet signed the “Manifesto of Support for One-Island Region” launched during the One-Island Region Summit in Kabankalan City last June 6.

So far, 243 local officials in Negros have already signed the Manifesto.
