NEGROS Occidental Representative Alfredo Benitez (Third District) said he believes a one-island region is beneficial to both Negros provinces and he hopes that the summit to be held in Kabankalan City today will iron out the issues.

“I hope that they could agree and make it a reality,” Benitez said.

Days before the summit, Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo was quoted as saying he is uncertain about supporting the proposed Negros Island Region.

At present, Negros Occidental belongs to Western Visayas region while Negros Oriental is under Central Visayas region.

Benitez said the proposed one-island region is designed for Negrenses to have a representation in the national level so that Negros could have a rightful share of the budget allocated by the National Government.

The lawmaker also said he believes that the different dialects of the two provinces is not barrier because Cebuano is also the dialect used in many parts of Negros Occidental especially in the first and second districts.

“We hope that they would tackle the specifics on what’s going to happen in the one-island region,” he added.
