BACOLOD City Mayor Monico Puentevella said on Friday that he sees no need to talk further with the management of AVM Bernardo Engineering, the private operator of the city-owned slaughterhouse in Barangay Handumanan.

Unless they pay what is mandated in the contract, there is no need to talk, the mayor said.

“All these years they failed to pay what was stipulated in the contract. They are only paying about P30,000 (a month). In short, they are violating more than half of the provisions in the contract so there is no need to talk,” he added.

Asked to comment on the statement of AVM Bernardo Engineering owner Antonio Valeriano M. Bernardo that he doesn’t consider as violations the deficiencies pointed out by the city government, the mayor said: “That is their version, that they have not violated the contract.”

"I have to do what has to be done to protect the interest of the public. What is important is that the prices of meat will go down. They also added the 12 percent Value Added Tax on their prices," Puentevella said.

Bernardo was in Bacolod last weekend and he was joined by slaughterhouse plant manager Glorydee Cometa and legal counsel Marvin Tañada during a press conference.

He told reporters they are seeking an audience with Puentevella to discuss the concerns and issues regarding the operations of the city’s slaughterhouse.

Bernardo said that as private contractor of the city’s abattoir, they are the partner of the city government in extending slaughtering services to the community.

For his part, Tañada said that they cannot find in the memorandum of agreement (MOA) a provision that allows or authorizes the other party to take over in case of violation.

Puentevella had earlier said city plans to take over the operation of the slaughter after AVM Bernardo violated certain violations of its MOA with the City Government. (CNC)
