NEGROS Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo Benitez said he sees the need for the region to have a senator after reports circulated that he is being groomed to join the administration senatorial slate in 2016.

Benitez, however, said at this point, 90 percent of his focus is on the Third District's affairs, and only 10 ten percent on politics.

"To tell you frankly our region especially our province needs a senator. I have seen so much improvement in Iloilo because they have two senators, Miriam Defensor Santiago and Senate President Franklin Drilon,” he said.

Benitez added: “We need to have a voice again in the Senate and in the national government like in the housing department for the province to have access to funds and resources."

“I don't think that the President has already decided on who will be included in the official line-up. That's something to be decided on a much later date. It's too early to say who are the people running and probably it would be based on who are those interested and their winnability,” he said.

Benitez said it is flattering that people are considering him for a higher office, but at this point he still has unfinished business at the Third District.

Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. assured Benitez of his support if he decides to run for the senate.

When asked of a possible offer for a national or cabinet position, Benitez said, "I don't know. I don't think so. It would probably take our focus from the district."

He also denied speculations that he is the Liberal Party (LP) congressman being eyed to replace Margarita Juico, who resigned as chair of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

"I am a hundred percent sure it's not me," he said.
