BACOLOD City Councilor Jose Carlos Lopez admitted on Fridau that he indeed followed up the development of the criminal case being faced by Mayor Monico Puentevella before the Sandiganbayan.

“It’s true that I followed it up. There is nothing wrong about it,” Lopez said.

Puentevella is facing a case for violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act for alleged overpricing in the purchase of Information Technology (IT) packages for public schools during his term as congressman.

Lopez, who is currently abroad, confirmed in a telephone interview that he sent a letter to the Sandiganbayan.

In a resolution, the Sandigayan Fourth Division warned him that the Sandiganbayan is not the proper venue to raise his issues and concerns against the mayor.

It added that the allegations of the councilor is “merely noted without action and with a stern reminder to Lopez that the Sandiganbayan is a court of law which is tasked to try the case and resolve it on the merits in accordance with the law, evidence and applicable jurisprudence.”

Lopez said he also wrote the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals and these agencies took cognizance of his letters.

The councilor said in the telephone interview that Puentevella did him wrong as the mayor disapproved most of his proposed projects and also terminated his job order employees.

“It is not me who will suffer but the people of Bacolod because my projects were stopped by the mayor,” he said. “He blamed me before that I was the one who followed up his case. Because he pushed me to do it, then I did it.”

Lopez said Puentevella’s “suspension is very imminent and without doubt.”

“I dare the mayor, if they feel that they have a very strong case in the Sandiganbayan, why not withdraw the motion to quash and motion for reconsideration they have filed and let the case proceed with the trial on the merits of the case,” he said.

Lopez denied the allegations that he followed up the case against Puentevella because he is running for congressman in 2016 with Rep. Evelio Leonardia as his candidate for mayor.
