THE Central Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco) saved 6.317 megawatts of power during the observance of Earth Hour from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The power saved this year is higher compared to last year's observance of the Earth Hour, which was only 3.034 megawatts, based on the report of the Ceneco general manager Sulpicio Lagarde to the Department of Energy.

Increase in terms of public and consumer awareness may have contributed to the increase in power saved, the report said.

The Earth Hour 2014 has the theme “Use Your Power” that aims at raising people’s awareness on the state of the global environment.

In Bacolod City, the Earth Hour program was held at SM City Bacolod.

The Philippines is among the 16 beneficiaries of the worldwide Earth Hour Blue event.

The Earth Hour Blue, a project launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), aims to inspire participants to financially support communities all over the world through environmental campaigns.

For an hour, between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. in local time zones across the globe, households and different community sectors turned off non-essential lights as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

A portion of the proceeds of the project will be used to build motorboats for the families in coastal villages in the Philippines affected by super typhoon Yolanda in November last year.

The WWF said the motorboats will be made of fiberglass and plastic.
