THE number of suspected measles cases in Negros Occidental has reached 70 from January to March 8, 2014.

Dr. Jessie Fama, medical specialist of the Provincial Health Office, said Wednesday that of the reported suspected cases, four were already confirmed.

The confirmed cases are from the towns E.B. Magalona and Pontevedera and the cities of Kabankalan and Silay.

Fama said that measles vaccination is ongoing in all barangay health centers in Negros Occidental to contain the suspected cases.

From January to end of February, 62 suspected measles were reported, including the same four confirmed cases.

Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, head of Provincial Health Office, said last month that if all the suspected cases will be confirmed, the figure can be considered alarming.

In the first two months of 2013, only eight measles cases were reported.

Tumimbang urged city and municipal health offices to intensify measles immunization, particularly in areas where suspected high cases were reported.

The symptoms of measles begin from seven to 14 days after a person is infected, and include blotchy rash, fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes (conjunctivitis), feeling run down, achy (malaise), tiny white spots with bluish-white centers found inside the mouth (Koplik’s spots).

Three to five days after the start of symptoms, a red or reddish-brown rash appears. The rash usually begins on a person’s face at the hairline and spreads downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet. When the rash appears, a person’s fever may spike to more than 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
