THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) has ordered the suspension of motor vessel SF Adventure after it caught fire following an explosion that injured six of its crew members while docked at the Bredco port in Bacolod City last Friday.

Lieutenant Commander Glen Daraug, head of Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)- Bacolod Station, confirmed on Sunday the suspension, saying the Marina will inspect the cargo ship to determine if it is complying with safety requirements.

Motor vessel SF Adventure, owned by businessman Bobby Chua, transports metals and steel materials.

Daraug said the owner of the vessel gave assistance to the injured crew members -- Ronilo Gebalcar, Deo Norico, Froulin Sembrano, all from Iloilo, Pedrito Mahinay of Bacolod City, Inocencio Sarbido of Cebu, and Artemio Rosales of Leyte.

All of them sustained second to third degree burns, but are already in stable condition.

Investigation conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection showed the crewmen were using a welding machine at the fuel storage portion of the vessel when the blast happened.

Daraug said welding inside the vessel should be done with precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the workers, especially if there is fuel because it’s flammable.

He said they will also check if the victims were wearing protective gears during the incident.

Daraug said the suspension order issued by Marina aims to prevent the cargo vessel from leaving Bredco in the aftermath of Friday’s incident.
