THE replica of the Bacolod Government Center located on the Gonzaga St. side of the plaza will become an "art haven," said Mayor Monico Puentevella during the opening of the National Arts Month celebration held at the plaza on Sunday.

He said the welcome marker will be occupied by the local artists.

The Bacolod Arts Month themed “Art on the Edge” is a joint project of the City of Bacolod and Art Association of Bacolod-Negros (AAB-N) with the support of the Office of the Mayor and the City Council’s committee on history, arts and culture chaired by Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue.

The welcome marker at the plaza, which is a replica of the Bacolod Government Center, was built by the Leonardia administration to provide artists an art gallery and a venue where they can sell their products.

Puentevella said the request to use the welcome marker at the plaza was made by AAB-N president Marisol Alquizar.

It will become a place where artists can display their artworks and where musicians can play music to entertain the public.

Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. said that he, together with Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, will sponsor two resolutions, one naming the road fronting the Pope John Paul ll Tower at the Reclamation Area as Arte Kalye, where artists can freely express themselves by painting the street, and another resolution converting the welcome marker at the plaza as an “art haven.”

It will be a place for different kinds of art, including visual arts, music, dance, literary arts, photography, the councilor said.

“We will declare the place an art haven and art mural of Bacolod City,” Gamboa said.

Puentevella said they also plan to beautify the public plaza and make it a venue for music and the arts as well.

A stage will also be provided for musicians so people will have a chance to hear a concert at the plaza. The area will be called the “musician’s corner,” he said. (CNC)
