PERSONNEL of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) in Negros Occidental are checking on the extent of damage to agriculture all over the province due to extreme cold.

In Salvador Benedicto town, where temperature has reached as low as 16 degrees Celsius, The Provincial Disaster Management Program Division said vegetable growers are concerned that their plants’ growth will stagnate because of the extremely cold weather.

Vegetable growers said the frost could easily deteriorate the vegetables’ condition.

This is also the reason why prices of vegetables have doubled.

Salvador Benedicto is one of the biggest sources of vegetables and root crops in the province.

"We'll just hope that this extreme cold will not stay long," said provincial agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan.

He added that since the cold weather is a natural thing, there's nothing the people can do except pray that this won't stay long.

The cold weather has also killed animals in various parts of the province.

Between January 2 and 27, 114 animals have died in 24 barangays in 12 towns and cities costing P912,290.

Dr. Renante Decena, provincial veterinarian of Negros Occidental, said animal breeders, especially poultry raisers, should provide heaters for their animals to cushion the effect of extreme cold.

He added that the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) has also mobilized paravets to provide technical assistance and medicines in the affected areas.

Decena also advised the farmers not to expose their animals especially carabaos and cattle and refrain from bringing them to the fields.
