BACOLOD City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia casts doubts on the authenticity of the opinion of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) relative to the validity and legal date for celebrating the city's Charter Day.

Leonardia stood firm that it was on June 18 that Bacolod became a city with the signing into law of the city's charter by Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon.

As they analyze the details in the said opinion, Leonardo and his group have noticed that the letterhead where in the opinion was written is not readable.

And the letter that came from the Office of Representative Anthony Golez addressed the information to the "City Government of Bacolod City" along with the opinion from the "National Historical Institute" instead of Commission.

There is no such thing as the National Historical Institute, Leonardia said.

A check with NHCP's website, Sun.Star learned that NHCP was created in 1972 initially as the National Historical Institute to integrate the diverse functions of various historical agencies.

Leonardia said they will continue to honor and celebrate June 18 as the city's Charter day.

He said those who would want to celebrate the Charter with us, we will celebrate it on June 18 and those who would want to celebrate it on Oct. 19 would celebrate it with Golez.

Leonardia has tasked the City Legal Office to make an answer to the legal points that were raised in the opinion made by the National Historical Commission.
