Theirs is a worldwide volunteer organization of business and professional women whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.
For the Biennium 2014-2016, the organization installed its new set of officers at the Sen. Jose Locsin Cultural and Civic Center. Led by SIPR Governor and guest speaker Myra Paz Abubakar, Soroptimists from West Visayas clubs and the National Soroptimist Headquarters were in attendance.
Also noted among the special guests were Silay City Mayor Jose Montelibano and former Silay City Mayor Ramon “Titot” Jison and Philippine Ambassador to Canada, Girlie Garcia.
Induct the new members was Vice Governor of Aklan Province, who is likewise this Biennium’s District Director for West Visayas, Gabrielle “Billie” Calizo-Quimpo.
Among the new members are Rhea Guillema, SRA’s Atty. Johana Jadoc, Silay Housing Officer, Alore Golez, Barangay Captain Demetria Aplaon and Amelia Yusay, SICIWA Board Member and a certified public accountant.
Outgoing president Marissa Montelibano, in her valedictory message, thanked the club members for their support and cooperation for her impact projects during her four-year term as president, most especially SI Silay’s hosting of the 24th Mid-Biennial Conference in 2013.
She gave special awards of recognition to Charter President Maida Jison, Past President Virgie Virata, PIO and “resident choreographer” Janette Garcia Sanchez, Treasurer Elaine P. Montelibano and Vice-President Liwayway Javelona.

Incoming president Atty. Kara Aimee Quevenco presented President Marissa with a Plaque of Recognition for her inspiring leadership and meritorious services as club president for an unprecedented four years.
In her acceptance speech, she exhorted club members to be true to the mission of Soroptimist in their quest for women’s rights. She made some parallelism between Soroptimism and the legendary Princess Kansilay, after whom Silay was named, and called on all Soroptimists to fight to uplift the status of women and girls in society.
After the simple yet elegant ceremonies, dinner followed with entertainment provided by the multi-awarded Kabataang Silay Rondalla and the Hugyaw Silay dancers.
We must applaud the Silay ladies for their work and their temerity to be the best in what they do.
