A Negrense with a beautiful job

NEGRENSE Stephen Diaz has one of the most beautiful jobs in the world. And I am not exaggerating.

Only in his early 30s, Stephen has turned into a “man of the world,” so to speak, covering international and highly publicized beauty competitions.

Last weekend, he was among the top judges to pick who will represent Hungary in the highly contested Miss International next year. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Sandy, as he is fondly called, was a lanky young man who studied at the Negros Occidental High School (NOHS). Her younger sister, Diana Girlie is among my closest friends, thus forming my affiliation with him, now known as a popular expert and pageant coach in Japan today.

Far from being a Math and Science geek in high school, Stephen has fine-tuned his potentials in reporting bankable crown holders via missosology.com, a go-to site for all things beautiful and pleasing to the eyes.

As of writing, Missosology registered as the number one beauty pageant site with the most number of visits.

“Missosology.com is my link to the world! I met a lot of wonderful people through my pageant coverage. I give advice to some delegates on how to win the pageant,” he shares.

For years now, he works as an elementary school English teacher at Gyoda City, a small town north of Japan. On the side, he publishes reports and push digital campaigns to weigh who among contestants of various pageants "sell" online.

Pageant forecasting, among others, is Sandy’s forte. His logical reasoning, experience and keen eye for crown-worthy contenders make many reviews online as fearless predictions to who will win or end up as ‘thank you’ girls.

Living overseas alone is a different challenge. But his independence at an early age paved the way for a meaningful life abroad.

Banking on his credibility as among the adjudged outstanding students in the province during his time, he remains very active in community works and church affairs. I could attest to how their family here in Bacolod supports their church, thus, Sandy is doing the same in his new-found home.

Being very active in Japan's cultural and art scene, he manages beauty boot camps, imaging and personality development training. He is part of the Miss International Japan, Miss Earth Japan and the Miss Universe edition of the country as either publisher or trainer.

He witnessed the historic crowning of two Filipina beauty queens: Miss International 2005 Precious Lara Quigaman and Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago, both in Tokyo, Japan.

Charge it to his friendly countenance and warm Negrense charm, he is a close friend to the queens, too—Miyako Miyazaki who was Miss Universe 4th runner-up in 2003 and Yael Markovich, then Miss International Israel, among others.

Sandy is on summer break from school now. He is in Budapest enjoying the magnificent Parliament Building and the Jewish Synagogue in Dohan, few of his many perks being a champion coach to beauties of Hungary.

Together with topnotch photographers, journalists, image consultants and beauty queen builders, he trained potential 'stars.'

Asked about his definition of beauty, Sandy was quick to say that "beauty is very relative and at times, vain." But because of his conventional Christian family upbringing, he is sharp to support his own words with deeper thoughts, "But what is essential is your fear of the Lord, because that is the most admirable quality, at least for a woman.”

Indeed, his keen eyes for the standards of beauty have elevated him to what he is today: matured, strong-willed and a beautiful person. His inability to praise his achievements in usual conversations and the support he gives to his clan back home is beauty to its purest sense. Now, that's a beautiful story!
