A precious gift

FIRST birthdays are always are always hallmark memories. When our baby turns one, we look back to the time when they were helpless little beings, absolutely fragile that needed to be always warm and cuddled. They transform to little tykes - wanting to be independent as they venture to stand alone and even take solo steps.

Independence comes with learning to eat with their hands, they are curious with cellphones, can now appreciate toys when before, it was the gift's wrapping paper that they were more enamored with.

Physically, they have tripled in weight since the time of their birth and have grown from nine to 11 inches. As they become more mobile, all those cute mounds of baby fat soon start to disappear.

As to sleeping habits, there is more time during the day to play and less sleep, and Mommy and Daddy are not as burdened at nights on waking up for breastfeeding or the giving the formula, although there are still some morning and afternoon naps.

At one, they also love interacting with fellow babies. In a world surrounded by adults, they realize that they also have their own cute peers having the same limitations and enjoy the same things.

Mikey Suravilla Poblador has now turned one. He loves to walk, in fact run. One of the worries of parents and lolos and lolas, of course, is the possibility of accidents which can never be avoided.

Independent, they dislike to be held when they explore their surroundings. Mikey is like that. Mikey also enjoy having playdates with my apo Iñigo. He comes to our home and watching them is a joy.

Playdates - that's the term now of playing time, before, it was just coming over so that the kids can play. Now, it's playdates...how sosyal!!!

With the coming celebration of Mikey turning one, Daddy Mike and Mommy Mae were busy. Paternal Lola Sonia decided it had to be in clubhouse of her condominium which was the perfect venue. With a swimming pool and space for little guests and their parents and grandparents as well, the setting was perfect.

Lola Dorie helped in preparing the food, the giveaways and planning the party. There was the pabitin, and all the joys that come with a children's party especially the spaghetti, the cakes, the sandwiches and all the established staples. There was even dirty ice-cream compliments of Tita Maricris of GMA who herself is infanticipating after a long lull.

Titos and Titas on the Poblador and Suravilla side were there to celebrate and even Fr. Farley graced the occasion. Good friends of Mae and Mike were there likewise to be counted in the big event.

Mikey is a precious gift from our Lord. For years, Mae and Mike have been trying to get pregnant, however, this wish evaded them. After many failed attempts, the thought or even the trying was quashed. Mae and Mike decided to be content with just flowing with what is.

About less than a year and a half ago, Mae decided to have an ultrasound because she was experiencing tummy pains and her stomach seemed bloated. To everyone's surprise, Mae's especially, she was pregnant. Asking how many weeks, her obstetrician's reply was "Do you want to know the gender?" That is how far gone she was.

A blessing indeed because as both mothers (Dorie and Sonia) would say, if they knew that she was with child in her first trimester, they would have strapped and confined her to bed.

Mikey, the blessing is now all of a year old and everyone is elated!
