Gaining Momentum

"YOU’RE never truly dressed without a smile!" That's from a song from the movie, Annie. A smile truly does wonders to a person's face and general aura. And the way we smile can somehow get affected by how we flash those pearly whites.

Taking care of our teeth is very important as it affects our overall well-being. Recently, I was able to interview Dr. Maria Bernadette Ramos, one of the leading dental care specialists in Bacolod.

Here, Dr. Ramos shares essential tips on how to take care of our teeth while getting the value for money:

Gaining Momentum: How important is dental care to the overall well-being of a person?

Dr. Ramos: Dental care is very important. Studies have shown a link between tooth and gum problems caused by bacteria with the risk of heart disease. Parents must note that kids' milk teeth should be taken care of as they affect the coming out of the permanent teeth. Parents are often under a wrong impression that milk teeth are "disposable" and therefore not as important as permanent ones. Infants' gums should always be cleaned to foster healthy milk teeth.

Is dental care really expensive?

If we take care of the primary needs of our teeth which are dental cleaning and check-up every six months to one year, then we would lessen the need for other procedures such as extraction and replacement, dentures, braces, or fillings.

Having a healthy habit of eating the right food and brushing regularly and properly can greatly help.

Flossing should not be neglected and must be part of a daily routine. Flossing removes plaque in between teeth, something that regular brushing cannot do.

Expensive toothbrush and toothpaste do not necessarily mean the best dental care. It is how you brush, whether it's done in the correct way and regularly, that matters.

Children should learn the importance of taking care of their teeth. When kids are taught to appreciate the benefits of eating, brushing, and flossing right, it becomes easier to bring them for dental check-up.

What are the things to consider in looking for dental care with value for money?

There are many options available depending on a person's need and capacity. The things to consider are the materials being used, the kind of treatment needed, and the procedures to be done. A person can weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the options presented by their dentist and fit this to their wants and needs.
