THE job of a human resource (HR) manager is one of the most fulfilling, albeit one of the most challenging, jobs today.
As an HR officer, you serve two masters at the same time: Balancing between making sure that the company achieves its goals as a business entity, and managing the needs and development of the employees.
Formerly known as personnel management, HR management (made up of HR professionals carrying a variety of titles such as employee relations manager, people manager, and HR manager) has evolved into more than just the basic activities relating to employees such as recruitment, training, termination, compensation and benefits administration.
The rising awareness of corporations on the importance of the workforce in the overall success (or failure) of the business has encouraged the creation of a “special department” exclusively assigned to taking care of the employees.
The presence of HR officers in today’s companies is considered one of the greatest breakthroughs in the business industry.
The role of HR department has been expanded, it now encompasses administration; analysis and reporting; employment contracts, conditions and disputes; industrial relations; intra-company communication; legal compliance; personal support (individual employees); recruitment; risk management; rules and culture; staff assessment, job design, performance, and remuneration; strategic role in the business; termination of employment; and trainings.
In the Philippines, the People Management Association of the Philippines or PMAP (formerly known as Personnel Management Association of the Philippines) is the premier organization of HR professionals and people managers.
It has more than 56 years of experiences in helping institutions mold an enlightened, competent, socially responsible, and influential sector of people managers who can effectively participate in nation-building.
PMAP is not merely composed of HR practitioners but also of members from different NGOs (non-government organizations) and private sectors handling people relations.

Locally, the PMAP-Negros Chapter, led by its president, Maria Louie Jomero, has provided a venue for HR practitioners to converge for updates on the field of HR. More importantly, it practices the PMAP’s national advocacy of making the organization involved in the community.
So for its 2014 Annual Chapter Training, PMAP-Negros Occidental Chapter is inviting participants handling people management or industrial relations to attend a seminar on “The Secret of Leading and Managing People… A Gentle Art of Employee Disciple: The E.D.G.E. (Employee Discipline for Global Excellence) on June 11, Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the O Hotel in Bacolod.
