Forget the Cronut; now it's Wonut

I WONDER if people are still eating Cronuts, or has this rather overdone food craze finally died on the vine? I heard L'Fisher is still making its version, the Croinut, but I've no idea how it's doing.

Back in the US, home of the Cronut, not to be outdone by Cronut creator Dominique Ansel, a Chicago bakery has created what it hopes will be the next food fad to sweep the world - the Wonut. This is a half-waffle, half-donut creation.

Alex Hernandez, owner of the Waffle Cake Café, claimed the new creation has been selling like hot cakes with 150 snapped up in just a few hours. Of course he would say that, wouldn't he?


He's clearly determined not to let Chicago be the second-place city in the pastry world.

Compared to the Cronut's price of $5 (P220), the Wonut is more modestly priced at $2.35 each (P105). Hernandez said they taste crunchy, 'cakey' and sweet. His favorite flavor is 'Mexican Chocolate' because the spicy cocoa powder helps balance the flavors.

The Wonut is made with a slightly thicker version of the café's signature waffle batter, which is cooked in a waffle iron and then deep-fried. The Wonut is then dipped in sugar, marshmallow, maple or chocolate glaze and topped with sprinkles, chocolate shavings or a number of other toppings.

After developing the idea of the Wonut, Hernandez spent several months trying to come up with the right name. He tried out flonut, yo’nut, dofflé and daffle before settling on Wonut, which had the best customer reaction.

Hernandez says Cronuts and Wonuts have little in common. “They’re so different,” he said. “They really only resemble each other because of the name combination.”

Wonuts are much denser than the fluffy Cronut. Hernandez encourages customers to eat them with a knife and a fork because they're so sticky.

This new creation come in ten different flavors, including apple fritter, red velvet, maple pecan, Mexican chocolate and birthday cake, complete with vanilla icing and multi-colored sprinkles.

But, with the obesity epidemic in mind, the café also offers 'health-conscious' whole wheat and green tea Wonuts.

There is no word yet as to how many calories there are in each Wonut.

If this new fad takes off, it will be interesting to see just how quickly other bakeries around the world start making their own versions. Hernandez has begun the process of copyrighting the name, much as the Cronut creators did, but said he wouldn't be surprised if imitators began to emerge.

Yes, indeed. I'm sure there is at least one pastry chef in Bacolod already hard at work creating a copy.
