“I’ll keep it brief. This is going to be our best school year ever!” was Teacher Ja’s response with a smile so big it hid her eyes!
After the end of a three-day intensive workshop in progressive education, Teacher Joe had asked everyone what they were excited about for the coming school year. Teacher Ja was the last to share and her words were like a red shining cherry placed on top of a chocolate parfait! It was the capstone to all our sentiments! We were excited!
Together with our team of teachers, I joined her in a Progressive School Summer Institute conducted by Didi Manahan and her inspiring team of teachers from Keys School Manila.
I would not have been surprised if Teacher Ja said a lot of work was ahead of us or implementing what we all learned was going to be challenging. Both were true.
On the other hand, her response was customary of her. For the past seven years, working with her I always knew she did not just teach her grade schoolers. She loved them. And so does the rest of our Lamblight team! I’m just so proud to be part of our team!
Work that is challenging becomes exciting when it is done with love. When it is done for others.
We all shared the same mindset those past three days. We had our students on top of our minds. How can we be more respectful of our students' individual needs? How can we make Math enjoyable for our Grade 5 class? How can we help our high schoolers enjoy writing essays? We were all learning for our students, not for ourselves.
Do you want to boost your happiness today? Do three simple things for others. Pay for the fare of another person on the jeep. Be nice to the co-worker who annoys you. Buy a cup of coffee for the security guard. Say thank you to your family driver. Be nice to the waiter. Buy flowers for your wife.
You can come up with countless other ways of doing something for others. Do three. If you can, do five. Studies show you will feel happier.
Why should you boost your happiness today? According to a study involving 250,000 participants, conducted by Sonja Lyubomirsky and her colleagues from the University of California, when you’re happy, you’re more sociable and kind; you improve your ability to resolve conflict, and you strengthen your immune system!
Boost your happiness today. Do three nice things for others. You deserve to be happy! Choose to have a Magnificent Monday!*
