A royal return

AN ARTIST may wander for a while, trek new roads or try new styles, but he will always return to his home, and his old form.

Take it from Silay-based artist Roderick Tijing as he expresses his sense of returning to his roots as a painter, in his 5th solo exhibit titled “The Return of the King” at the Nova Gallery in Makati.

“The ‘king’ represents anyone who leads his people—he may be a politician, a general, a musician, a church leader, a farmer, a player, or anyone who was away for a while, and now has returned to lead or to resume things he does best,” Roderick shares.

“In my case, as an artist, I am returning to my old form, the old style that I love; landscapes or painting scenes but now with a twist, with my own characters developed through time,” the football enthusiast adds.
The paintings on exhibit at the Nova Gallery are reminiscent of colored picture books, with manicured landscapes and abundant foliage, set with evenly spaced Cumulus clouds.

It is in this sun-soaked setting that Roderick positions his signature plump men and anthropomorphic animals.

Roderick further explains that his inspiration for his artworks was drawn from his trips to Europe as he ventured through many of Switzerland’s castles and landscapes.

After his college graduation in 2004, he took the opportunity to visit his parents who are residing in Switzerland. “The breathtaking sceneries of rolling hills and lush backdrops are comparable to paradise, it is a place that will forever be etched in my mind,” he fondly recalls.

This exhibit then is a personal response to the snippets and memories of the artist’s most cherished vacation.

The many stories he picked during his travels inspired him to read about the lives of former kings and queens. His thoughts have formed his dreams of child-like stories into fascinating settings, much like a faraway land only he can perceive.

Indeed, travel affords one to discover, explore and reflect. Roderick’s travels to Europe have opened his perspective on life outside the Philippines. And when he returned home, he has fresher outlook and views of his native land.

“The Return of the King” is Roderick’s fifth solo exhibit. It opened March 28 and will run until April 18. Nova Gallery is located at 12A La Fuerza Plaza, Chino Roces Avenue, Makati City.
