THE colorful Pintaflores Festival of San Carlos City was declared champion in the Best Festival Dances Competition at the Panaad Stadium last night.

Rudy Reveche, chairman of the festival dance competition, said that Pintaflores, with children as dancers thus the festival entry was called Pintaflores Bata, grabbed the championship trophy and P50,000 cash prize.

First runner was the Bailes de Luces of La Castellana, last year’s champion, with P40,000 cash prize, he said.

La Carlota’s Pasalamat Festival was second runner-up with P30,000 cash prize; Silay City’s Kansilay Festival—third runner-up with P20,000 cash prize; and Moises Padilla’s Hinuptanan Festival—fourth runner-up with P10,000.

Reveche said there were 21 competing festivals. The MassKara Festival of Bacolod was guest performer only.

Also included in the Top 10 were Sagay City, Bago City, Kabankalan City, Victorias City, and Murcia.

Judging the festival competition were Negros Oriental Board Member Mariant Villegas, Franco Velas of the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts’s Dance Committee, Susan Arcega of MBC-Aliwan; cultural anthropologist Nestor Horfilla of Davao, and choreographer Julius Marin Sollesta of Iloilo.

The Best Festival Dances competition was the opening salvo of the weeklong 21st Panaad sa Negros Festival, as it was held immediately after the opening ceremonies.
