PUPILS of Rizal Elementary School in Bacolod recently underwent a simulation exercise on how to respond to fire and earthquake.

A similar drill, conducted on March 19, was also held in selected cities across the country.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) had decided to conduct the quake drill for school children since they are the most vulnerable in times of disasters.

OCD regional director Rosario Cabrera, who observed the drills, said there is a need to improve the capability of school children in responding to earthquakes and fires.

The Department of National Defense has chosen Bacolod City as the pilot area for Western Visayas for the holding of the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) for the first quarter of the year.

In performing the quake and fire drills, pupils of Rizal Elementary School formed a line while running to the safest area, putting their hands on their head. They proceeded to one area and waited for instructions on what to do next.

The drills were conducted by the personnel of OCD and the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), with the assistance of rescue and fire volunteers.

CDRRMO head Rufino Alcala says the NDRRMC is cognizant of the need to enhance the disaster preparedness of communities considering that in the recent months, the people have seen the calamitous effect of earthquake in various parts of the country especially the Visayas area.

Cabrera said the drill also highlighted the communication exercise with the NDRRMC to test the effectiveness and efficiency of the communication system, in collaboration with Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils, national line agencies, and other stakeholders.

Mayor Monico Puentevella is campaigning for disaster preparedness among the Bacolodnons, and is working for the enhancement of skills of barangay officials in responding to disasters.
