Experience organic lifestyle in the city

SOME people might think that if they want to see organic farms, they have to travel far to mountainous areas to see organically grown vegetables, fruits, chickens, and swine.

These days you don't have to go far. There's one in Bacolod, just a few minutes drive from the city proper. And not just an organic farm, it's also a perfect venue for family gatherings and special occasions, with fun amenities and activities to suit one's organic lifestyle.

May's Organic Garden and Eco-Park is a six-hectare property at Sitio Aning in Barangay Pahanocoy. It's practically overlooking the main highway when going to southern part of Negros Occidental.

As summer nears, the heat and the humidity in the city are exacting their toll on us, city-dwellers. So on a weekend, and even on weekdays, a trip to May's Organic Garden would be a pleasant respite from the city living.

Entering the landscaped garden, a wooden calesa greets you. Scattered around the garden are small and big kubo (hut), swing cottages, and a tree house.

A prominent feature of the place is, of course, the grand pavilion where special receptions are held. The restaurant serves buffet or turo-turo style of organic lutong bahay delicacies.

As a garden, the place is a delicious sight of organic vegetables, with spices and herbs like chives, tarragon, stevia and basil.

As a venue for recreational activities, guests can go swimming, fishing, horseback riding, swan-boating and biking.

As a place for special gatherings, May’s Organic Garden and Restaurant has a function hall and cabanas for pre-nuptial pictorials, garden weddings, birthdays, business meetings, seminars, trainings, educational trips and team-building activities.

Guests who want to know more about organic agriculture can also learn how to produce organic fertilizer, and learn vermi-composting through scheduled seminars.

Its RU Eco-Park showcases different organic farming technologies such as water system, hydro ram pump, wind mill; elephant, rope, and community pump, as well as Korean pig technology, vermi-composting, bio-gas technology, and paper charcoal technology.

May's Organic Garden was primarily developed to support the technology that the family of Ramon and May Uy offers to organic farmers, says its manager, Ria Akamatsu.

It is a spin-off effort of RU Foundry & Eco Agri Foundation to showcase organic products and other organic farming technologies.

May Uy is passionate in gardening. With a keen sense of home decorating, she would love and enjoy having guests over, holding their family gathering and events at her home.

Hand-in-hand with husband Ramon Uy, an advocate of “Zero Waste Management” and of “Healthy Organic Farming," the couple thought that the garden, restaurant and eco-park was a great way to promote "organic living."

Thus, the family decided to open their “home" to friends of friends and eventually to the public in 2010.

Their son, Ramon "Chin-Chin" Uy Jr. told me that May's Organic Garden was the venue of the National Agri-Tourism Conference in 2012. The Agricultural Training Institute of the Department of Agriculture has named the place an "agri-tourism destination," he adds.

May's Organic Restaurant is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For reservations, call (034) 444- 3610.
