“IT'S showtime in Pulupandan!” says the young and dynamic Mayor Miguel Peña when Sun.Star graced their Salapan Festival recently.

It’s showtime because we have a lot of fun tourist destinations in Pulupandan, he explains with a smile.

For one, he adds, the town has become an exciting site for birdwatching.

Birdwatching or “birding” is the observation of birds as a recreational activity, says Wikipedia. It can be done with the naked eye, through a visual enhancement device like binoculars and telescopes, or by listening for bird sounds.

Municipal administrator and tourism officer Federico Infante Jr. says Pulupandan has become a favorite destination for bird-watching enthusiasts.

With 13 kilometers of coastline, Pulupandan faces the Guimaras Strait.

“This is biodiversity at its best, only in Pulupandan!” he adds.

The bird sanctuary is located at Sitio Cavan in Brgy. Tapong.
The site hosts a great number of bird species, some of which are migratory.

Among the bird species that flock the swampy area of Sitio Cavan are Garganey, Grey Heron, Marsh Sandpiper, Purple Heron, Whiskered Tern, Black-winged Stilt, Common Sterns, Whistling Ducks, and White Collared Kingfishers.

Just by watching them, you get awed by the sights, colors, behaviors, and sheer number of the birds.

Infante says the best time for birdwatching is from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

How to get there: Pulupandan is 30 kilometers from Bacolod, or approximately a 35-minute drive for private vehicles. Take a bus or jeepney from Bacolod to Pulupandan, then go straight to the municipal hall to register for the bird-watching, and they will send you to Sitio Cavan with a guide.
